A question from a homeowner:

What kind of chemicals it is best to use to power wash the house?
Usually there is no need to use any chemicals at all. A power washer with high enough pressure is capable of doing a good job of cleaning the house with just clear water. Any power washer with 2500 psi (pressure per square inch) or higher will work out well. Putting any chemicals in a power washer can damage it components, so if there is a need for any chemicals, they usually used separately.
Chalking is the most common problem. Chalking can occur when low quality paints have been used. So the obvious solution is to use better quality paint next time. Sometimes chalking can be seen on the walls around the house, where the water from sprinklers was hitting the wall. The first step to take is to adjust the sprinklers, and then the problem area can be pressure washed, primed and painted. Power washing the problem area from a close range most of the time will rid the surface of chalk. Tri-sodium phosphate (commonly known as TSP) sometimes is used to clean the excessive chalking.
Mildew is another problem that needs special attention, but is seen much less frequently. Bleach is usually used to get rid of mildew. After using any chemicals at all, the surface needs to be power washed with clear water to make sure that no residue is left, and the paint or primer will adhere well.
